HISTORY
The company was founded in 1891 in Piombino, an area known for its centuries-long tradition of iron making.
It was incorporated as Spranger & Ramsay Limited Partnership and took the name of La Magona d’Italia. In March 1900 Magona was transformed into joint - stock company with a share capital of 3 millions lire. At first it manufactured only steel and tin plate by immersion using English equipment and know-how.
The company grew rapidly producing steady high profits thanks to its nearly monopolistic position on the market. Following the installation of a galvanising and terneplate equipment, Magona started to manufacture also flat and corrugated galvanised sheets. The company maintained its leadership position till the Second World War; afterwards Magona had to use its own financial resources to rebuild the parts of the plant destroyed or damaged during the war.
The year 1954 brought about a major change in the industrial asset of the company: steel manufacturing was divested and at the same time cold steel processing was set up using hot rolled coils as raw material.
The start-up of a state-of-the-art Hot Dip Galvanising line n. 1 in 1964 and of a continuous Tin Plating in 1965 mark the beginning of a new configuration of the Company in terms of production and operational results.
The 1970’ saw the construction of two new facilities: a continuous Organic Coating line and the Hot Dip Galvanising line n. 2.
In the 80’ a second Organic Coating line and a continuous annealing were added.
In the 90’ Magona converted the annealing into another hot dip galvanising line (HDG n. 3), set up continuous cold rolling operations, dismantled the tin plating facility and built the Hot Dip Galvanising line n. 4.
On the distribution network front, several subsidiaries were created: Relp Acciai, Csar, Soflap, Smepp, Sis, Car e Magona International.
In 1998, La Magona d'Italia joined the French group Usinor, the leading European steelmaker.
Following the merger of Usinor, Arbed and Aceralia in 2002, ARCELOR Group was created: Magona became a part of one of the largest steel companies in the world.
In 2006, Arcelor Group merged with Mittal Steel creating ArcelorMittal, the worldwide leader in the steel industry.
